What is Epitalon?
Epitalon is a synthetic tetrapeptide composed of alanine, glutamic acid, aspartic acid, and glycine. It was developed from research involving Epithalamin, a peptide mixture extracted from animal pineal tissue.

Epithalamin is a complex pineal-derived preparation.
Results obtained with Epithalamin cannot automatically be assigned to Epitalon. FDA considered Epitalon free base and Epitalon acetate as separate bulk drug substances.

What does the research show?
Sleep and melatonin
FDA evaluated Epitalon for insomnia. Some literature involving pineal peptides reports changes in melatonin or sleep-related measures, but the record is limited by small samples, unclear methods, older publications, use of Epithalamin rather than Epitalon, and lack of independent replication.
Telomerase and telomeres
Cell-culture studies have reported increased telomerase activity or telomere length after Epitalon exposure. These experiments are relevant to mechanism, but longer telomeres in cultured cells do not establish that administering Epitalon safely slows human aging or improves clinical outcomes. Lifespan and cancer findings in animals
A 2003 mouse study reported no effect on mean lifespan but reported an increase in maximum lifespan measures and changes in certain age-related outcomes. Human evidence
Human claims often rely on Russian studies of pineal preparations, translations, abstracts, or publications that are difficult to independently assess. FDA concluded that the available evidence did not adequately establish effectiveness for insomnia and identified substantial safety and characterization uncertainties.

What did PCAC decide?
On July 24, 2026, PCAC recommended Epitalon-related bulk drug substances for inclusion on the 503A Bulks List. The vote was reported as 7–4, with an abstention. This was a recommendation about the compounding-list process—not approval of Epitalon as an anti-aging drug, proof that it lengthens human life, or immediate permission to compound.

Both are promoted for sleep, but they are unrelated molecules. Epitalon is a four-amino-acid pineal-related peptide. Emideltide/DSIP is a nine-amino-acid peptide studied historically in sleep and withdrawal. PCAC recommended Epitalon but did not recommend DSIP. Neither became FDA approved.
